Home » Armadale Line to Reopen in October as Byford Rail Extension Nears Completion
The long-awaited reopening of the Armadale Line has been confirmed, with passenger services set to resume on Monday, 13 October 2025, marking a major milestone for the METRONET Byford Rail Extension project.
This significant development will see the return of services along the full Armadale Line, including the newly constructed extension to Byford.
The Byford Rail Extension project includes the construction of a brand-new train station in Byford, featuring 400 parking bays and a 46-minute direct connection to Perth, alongside a new elevated station in the heart of Armadale with 200 parking bays. These new stations are designed to improve access and reduce congestion in Perth’s growing south-east corridor.
The project also delivers:
Jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments, the massive infrastructure project employed over 4,200 workers. It involved laying 8km of dual-track rail, installing 22,000 sleepers, and using 40,000 tonnes of crushed rock.
During the extended closure of the Armadale Line, the Public Transport Authority took the opportunity to carry out the Rail Revitalisation Program—a broad maintenance initiative between Kenwick and Sherwood stations. This included replacing 15km of track, upgrading crossings, and improving drainage, overhead wires, communications, and signalling systems.
Affordable travel remains a priority, with passengers continuing to benefit from the current two-zone fare cap. From 1 January 2026, the new one-zone fare cap will take effect, limiting SmartRider fares to just $2.80, significantly increasing the affordability of public transport across Perth.
To celebrate the reopening, a community event will be held on Sunday, 12 October, with further details to be announced. The event will also mark the opening of Long Park—a new seven-kilometre green corridor stretching along the rail line and featuring:
The Australind Train, which operates along the Armadale Line, is expected to resume services in early 2026, with final dates to be confirmed
