Guide to Maintain Your House in Winter!

As winter is coming, we are sharing tips for maintaining your house in winter. Preparing your home for cold weather can help you avoid costly repairs, increase energy efficiency, and ensure your family stays safe and warm. Although winter in Western Australia is generally milder compared to other regions, it still brings cool weather, heavy rainfall, and the occasional storm. These conditions can affect your home if you’re not properly prepared. A few simple maintenance tasks done early can help keep your home warm, dry, and running smoothly throughout the season.

Inspect and Seal Windows and Doors

Cold drafts can increase your heating bill and make your home uncomfortable. Be sure to check for gaps or cracks around windows and doors. Apply weatherstripping around door frames and use caulk to seal small gaps and cracks around windows. Consider installing door sweeps at the bottom of exterior doors.

Clean Gutters

Clogged gutters can lead water to overflow and damage eaves, walls, and foundations. Clear out leaves, sand, and debris from gutters and downpipes. Ensure water flows freely and away from the home—consider adding extensions or splash blocks at the end of downpipes.

Check Roof

Heavy rains can reveal (or worsen) existing roof problems. Leaks are easier and cheaper to fix before the worst of winter sets in. Look for cracked tiles, rusted sheet metal, or loose flashing. Pay attention to discoloration or mold spots on ceilings, which may signal a leak.

Prepare Your Garden and Outdoor Areas

Wind and rain can wreak havoc on outdoor spaces. Prevent damage and reduce maintenance with a few simple tasks:

  • Prune overhanging branches, especially near the roof or power lines.
  • Secure or store away lightweight furniture and garden items that could be tossed in a storm.
  • Aerate your lawn and add mulch to garden beds to retain warmth and moisture.
  • Trim tree branches

Inspect Your Hot Water System

Hot showers are a winter essential! Don’t wait for your water heater to fail on a cold night. Check for signs of corrosion, leaks, or strange noises. For electric systems, inspect the timer or thermostat to ensure efficient heating cycles.
