Winter Has Arrived in Whitby
The first chill of winter has settled across Whitby Town, with cooler mornings, soft afternoon light and the kind of quiet weekends that invite a slower pace. It's a season for warm kitchens, long walks and gathering close to home.
Across the estate, construction continues, gardens are being prepared for the cool months and the community is finding its winter rhythm. Here's what's happening this June.
Stage 5 Update
Construction across Whitby Stage 5 is ramping up, with crews on site progressing the next phase of the estate. The cooler conditions are ideal for earthworks and landscaping, and the change in pace is already visible across the development.
It's an exciting time for the wider Whitby community as more homes take shape and the next chapter of the estate comes into view.

Make the Most of Winter Outdoors
Perth's winter is mild, the light is beautiful and the surrounding bushland is at its best. A few ways to get outside close to home this June:
- Walk Heartwood Park early. Cooler mornings make a longer loop or run far more enjoyable. The ninja course is still a favourite with the kids.
- Visit Serpentine Falls. Winter rain has the falls flowing again. The walk down is family-friendly and around 15 minutes from Whitby. Day-use fees apply at the national park entry.
- Try the Whitby Falls Trail. A short 1.3 km loop starting in Mundijong. Easy graded, well marked and a nice midweek reset.
- Wander the Jarrahdale forest. The jarrah and marri canopy is at its lushest in winter. Bring a thermos and take the slower route.
- Pack a picnic for a local park. Rug up, slow down and let the kids run while you watch the season change.
Tag your winter outings on Facebook or Instagram so we can share them with the community.

The June calendar at Byford Library is one of the busiest yet. Highlights include the Sustainable Native Bouquet Workshop for adults (Thu 4 Jun), Eco Art Rock Painting for kids (Sat 6 Jun), Zero Waste Slow Stitch Bookmarks (Mon 8 Jun) and Native Bees for Kids (Sat 13 Jun). SJ Career and Enterprise Expo

Cosy Up Your Whitby Home
A new home is at its most lived-in during winter. The light softens, the kitchen does more work and the rhythm of the day slows down. A few small changes can make a big difference to how a Whitby home feels in the cooler months.
Layer your lighting with warm-toned lamps in the corners of living areas rather than relying on overhead lights. Add heavy curtains or thermal blinds where the late afternoon chill comes in. Roll out a rug in the spaces you use most, and swap lighter cushions and throws for textured wool or boucle to bring warmth and softness in. Draught-proof external doors, check window seals and consider a smart thermostat schedule to keep heating efficient.
Then build a few winter rituals into the week. A slow Sunday roast, a Friday film night with the family or a Saturday morning coffee in front of the window. Cosy is not just about the home itself, it's about how you use it.
Winter Garden Prep
Perth's mild winter is one of the best times to look after a Whitby garden. The soil is still warm enough for new plantings to settle in and regular winter rain takes much of the watering load off your hands.
A few jobs worth doing this month:
- Top up mulch around natives and garden beds to insulate roots and lock in moisture
- Prune roses, deciduous fruit trees and dormant ornamentals while they're resting
- Plant winter vegetables such as broad beans, peas, garlic, brassicas and leafy greens
- Check reticulation timers and reduce frequency now that rainfall is doing some of the work
- Plan ahead for spring wildflowers by clearing space for kangaroo paw, everlastings and grevillea
A little attention now sets the garden up for an easier spring and a stronger display when the warmer months return.
Whitby continues to grow with care through the cooler months. New homes are taking shape, gardens are being readied for the season ahead and the community keeps finding new ways to enjoy time together. Whether it's a Saturday at the markets, a workshop at the library or simply a slow walk through the estate, there's plenty to look forward to this winter.
